Gift Wrapped Square – Hope in the Holidays CAL – Free Crochet Pattern

All wrapped up with a neat little bow. This gift wrapped square is my addition to the Hope in the Holidays CAL. What’s a CAL? CAL is short for Crochet – A – Long. From December 2nd until January 1st a designer will be releasing an 8×8 inch square with their own personalized design! All these squares can be combined together to create a blanket. You can use all of them, or a combination of your favorites to create an amazing heirloom.

81 yards, Worsted weight, ( 4 ). I used WeCrochet Mighty Stitch, 3.53 oz/100 gm, 208 yds/190 m. The yarn for this pattern was generously donated by WeCrochet!

Your finished square will be approximately 8 x8 inch. To achieve a perfect square for seaming, you can block your finished work..

Border & Blocking

[CC]: CH1, 1/4 turn so that you are working down the left side – *1SC in each row, (SC, CH1, SC) in corner, 1SC in each ST*. Repeat until you’ve reached starting point. 1SC in CH1 space, SLST to next ST. Tie off. Weave ends.

Wet block work by misting with water on both sides until damp, then use pins to shape.

Shape until it measures approx 8 x 8 inches.

Leave until dry. You can speed up the process if you have a little fan to run beside it.

Feel Good Mittens – A Quick & Easy Crochet Pattern

My inspiration for this pattern came from my desire to make a pair of cozy pair of mittens that were also warm enough to withstand the cold (and sometimes harsh) Canadian winters. As Canadians, we grow up learning that winter is always just a few seasons away. We have learned to adapt for this reason. We have also learned to create things that will enable us to go about our day to day lives as well as enjoy outdoor activities for the duration of this long season. I like to think that these gloves allow for both these scenarios. They promote movement, comfort and functionality. If you are pumping your gas in a snowfall, taking the dog for a walk with a friend or ambushing your family with a snowball fight, they will always be there to keep your fingers warm and hands dry.

I asked some friends and family who I have gifted these gloves to over the years why they love them. A few of the responses that I got back were “they are comfortable”, “they are SO soft” and “they photograph well” from a goofy sibling. All of these are things I had kept in mind when creating this pattern. Some of the reasons why I have chosen to gift them are because they make great stocking stuffers. If you have a large family like I do, having a pattern that is also quick and easy to make is important as life gets a little busier heading towards the holiday season!

The Yarn:

For this pattern we are using Bernat Blanket yarn. I LOVE this yarn! It is a deliciously soft, chenille type yarn that is most often used for baby blankets. However, it has so much versatility that it makes it a great choice for this project as it is machine washable (Mom’s favorite phrase!) as well as dryer friendly! So after a few hours outside playing in the snow with your loved ones, feel free to take them off and pop them straight into the dryer while you warm up with hot cocoa and the perfect amount of marshmallows.

If you’ve never made a pair of mittens before, don’t worry! This beginner friendly pattern uses only single crochet and a few chains! I’ll walk you through step by step.

Materials:

80 yards, Super Bulky weight, ( 6 ). I used Yarnspirations Bernat Blanket Yarn, 10.5 oz/300 gm, 220 yds/201 m

Autumn Bliss Cowl – One Skein Wonder – Free Crochet Pattern

There is something quite magical about the changing of the seasons. The vivid hues of yellow, orange, and red. The crunching of the leaves underfoot. As the the crisp fall air kisses your cheeks, you reach for your cowl and pull it up close. The Autumn Bliss Cowl is the perfect transitional piece for your fall and winter wardrobe. This textured beauty is a close fitting, collar style cowl that can be worn tall to cover your face from the elements or worn gathered around your neck for a relaxed fall vibe. Pair it with a long tunic and leggings or a jean jacket!

I wanted to design a pattern that was first and foremost, cozy. I also wanted to create something that could be made with just one skein of yarn (money saving!) and crocheted in under an hour (time saving!) so that it makes the perfect cowl for gift giving or for market prep! One skein – one hour! Yep! Who doesn’t love a quick and easy make?

Construction: This cozy cowl is crocheted bottom up, in the round and features one of of my favorite stitches – Half Double Crochet. We will use the HDC stitch a couple different ways, turning a basic stitch into the gorgeous textured ridges you see here! Half Double Crochet in the 3rd loop(3LHDC) and Half Double Crochet in the Back Loop(HDCBL). With just two repeat rounds, it makes the PERFECT Netflix and crochet project.

The Yarn: The Autumn Bliss Cowl uses just ONE skein of Lion Brand Yarn Wool Ease Thick & Quick. I LOVE this yarn. It’s so versatile. 80% acrylic, which makes it a dream to work with. 20% wool for a touch of warmth but its not too scratchy on the skin! They have so many modern colors to choose from, it might be hard to make only one!

Materials:

100 yards, Super Bulky ( 6 ) yarn. I used 1 skein Lion Brand Yarns, Wool Ease Thick & Quick, 6 oz/170 g, 106 yd/97 m, in the ‘mustard’ colorway.
US Size N Crochet Hook (10mm)
Scissors
Darning Needle
Stitch Marker (optional)

Gauge:

7.5 stitches x 5 rows = 4″ square in HDC

Easy – Advanced Beginner

Scary Jack-O-Lantern Dishcloth – Free Crochet Pattern

Happy Halloween my pretties! Here’s a free tapestry crochet dishcloth pattern for you! All treat, no tricks!

I love making seasonal dishcloths. It’s a quick and easy way to add a splash of the holidays in your kitchen. Plus, they make doing the dishes more fun. And with that being almost everyone’s least favorite chore, any little bit helps right?! Halloween has always been one of my favorite holidays. I have a TON of decorations that I normally cover the house in… but if I’m being totally honest, this dishcloth is the only Halloween decorating I will be doing this year. Haha. Miss E is still a bit young to understand the concept, and we live on a secluded acreage, so we don’t get any trick or treaters. If you’re a big time decorator or have hardly any decorations at all, this scary dishcloth is for you!

The Yarn:

For this project I used Bernat Handicrafter Cotton. It’s affordable, durable, and comes in a wide variety of color options. Another great substitute would be Lily Sugar & Cream.

I designed this as a Jack-O-Lantern face, so my original vision was to make it orange and black. But I think it would look great in any Halloween color combination. If made with yellow or green features and a black background, it would look like a spooky grin in the dark night!

Materials

Any worsted weight ( 4 ) cotton in your preferred color choices. I used less than 1 skein each of Yarnspirations BERNAT Handicrafter Cotton (1.75oz/50g, 80yds/73m) in “Hot Orange” & “Black Licorice”.

Big & Little Bows – Free Crochet Pattern

The first time I put a bow headband on my daughter, she was 4 months old. Talk about cuteness overload! Why had I not done that sooner?? A bow is now my favorite go to accessory for her! If I’m making her a handmade dress or top, I will also make a matching bow with the leftover scraps of yarn. I’m a believer that ‘bigger is better’ so I will usually choose the big bow over the little bow.

The bow pattern comes in two sizes, big & little. You can choose which bow size works best for you. Both use minimal amounts of yarn and are a quick, easy make. These would be great small items to add to your table/booth at your next show. (COVID restrictions permitting!) You’ll also learn a new stitch! Learning new things is great fun.

For the Big & Little Bows pattern I used Caron Cotton Cakes. It’s a worsted weight (4) cotton/acrylic yarn. This yarn has great stitch definition and can be washed and dried if needed. That is always a bonus when your dealing with babies/toddlers! You can also switch up your yarn to use any leftovers that you may have, just adjust your hook size accordingly.

Let’s make some bows!

Gauge:

Not super important for this project
8 stitches x 8 rows = 2″ square
Pattern used for gauge: HDSS *see special stitches*

Abbreviations:

CH – Chain
SC – Single Crochet
HDSS – Half-Double Slip Stitch *see special stitches*
SLST – Slip Stitch
ST(S) – Stitch(es)

Sizes:

Small Bow = approx. 3 inches long x 2 inches wide
Big Bow = approx. 4.25 inches long x 2.5 inches wide

Notes:

Beginning CH1 is not counted as a stitch.
If you are a beginner, I recommend using stitch markers to mark the 1st stitch of your rows.

Special Stitches

HDSS – Half Double Slip Stitch

Pattern Instructions

Little Bow

Row 1: CH7, HDSS in the 2nd ST from hook, HDSS in each CH.Turn. (6 HDSS)

Row 2: CH1, HDSS in each ST. Turn. (6)

Rows 3- 14:Repeat row 2. Do not turn after last row.

Continue on to edge below big bow.

Pattern Instructions

Big Bow

Row 1: CH9, HDSS in the 2nd ST from hook, HDSS in each CH.Turn. (8 HDSS)

Row 2: CH1, HDSS in each ST. Turn. (8)

Rows 3- 20: Repeat row 2. Do not turn after last row.

Edge:

CH1, 1/4 turn your work so you are working down the side,
SC in each row, 3SC in corner, SC in each ST, 3SC in corner,
SC in each row, 3SC in corner, SC in each ST, SLST to CH1.
Finish off, weave ends.

Attaching the bow to clip/headband

That’s it! Enjoy your bow! There are many ways to customize this. You can add sequins during stitching, or you can add a jewel to the front of the bow while tying attaching to your clip/headband. Have fun with it!
